Description:
Swiftriver Passage is a work with contrasting sections. Slow, flowing, lyrical sections are contrasted by fast shifting 6/8 and 3/4 giving a wonderful variety in sonority and feel. There are nice ensemble moments and also the opportunity to feature a few soloists as well: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone and snare drum. This is an excellent piece for showing off an ensemble.
Swiftriver Passage was commissioned by the North Battleford High School Concert Band and the Living Sky School Division for the Centennial Celebrations of the City of North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 2013.
The title Swiftriver Passage brings to mind three images: The flowing of water down the Saskatchewan River; the passage of time for the people connected to the river; and a rite of passage as the modern community enters its second century.
Saskatchewan: From Kisiskâciwan in Cree which translates to Swift Flowing River
